Dear 2020

best of 2020 blog post

First off I want to say thank you. This year in a lot of ways was truly incredible. I met the most amazing people who have showed me support, love, and have helped pick me up countless times. I started my year off in Tofino, and realized my love and deep connection for the ocean. I became a yoga teacher, but more than that I learned to reevaluate my health, and life and slowly learned I needed to move forward. I learned that I wasn’t focusing on my spiritual or mental health in the way I should. I learned new coping techniques and learned to slow down. This year forced me to shift my focus to other avenues and taught me to create in new ways. I run an outdoor swim school in the summer months, and taught a lot more lessons than anticipated. It was refreshing, and I met some incredible families. I started doing a lot more food photography, which is something I always loved. I booked my first big client and successfully did a full two day photo shoot. I had an assistant on set with me for the first time, and in this moment I could finally see the effects of all of my hard work. I spent more time with my family. I moved to Vancouver, and live right by the ocean. I got a service dog who is the sweetest, most loveable little darling in the world.

But then there were the downs, and trust me there were a lot of downs. I am currently writing this post on my small desk under the dim lighting in my room at CAMH. For those of you that don’t know, CAMH stands for Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. I was admitted just over a week ago, meaning I spent my Christmas here. I have battled severe panic attacks, and major depression for quite sometime. Back in August of this year was my first time going to a hospital for my mental health. After waiting hours, the psychiatrist scribbled me a prescription and sent home. Less than a month later I was admitted to Lakeridge Health, in Ontario. I was treated terribly by the psychiatrist and was discharged, just over 24 hours later.

I was admitted to Vancouver General Hospital in late November again for severe panic attacks and depression. This time my experience was different. I met a wonderful group of individuals. An elderly man who nicknamed me Miss Universe and still calls me regularly. A graffiti artist that spray paints “sex toy” all over the city. A vegan buddy who would blast her hand held radio as she walked through the halls. A tall young man with a calming voice who would drape a blanket over his shoulders as it trailed behind him like a cape. We were all there for different reasons, had different pasts, but we all connected. We would colour and draw together and play cards against humanity before taking our meds at night time.

My stay was short, just under a week they wrote my prescriptions and I was sent back to my empty apartment across from the ocean. It was a tough transition and one I wasn’t ready for. This time they prepared me with a plan, and set me up for counselling. I felt a little better leaving but still knew deep down I wasn’t ready. Less than a month later I ended up here, at The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. I have been here just over a week and recently moved floors. On my previous floor I was the only female. I was constantly stared at by the other patients and at 4 am a patient would bang on my door and yell my name. I knew if I was truly going to get better it wasn’t going to be in this environment. I sincerely hope all of the patients I met on that floor are able to get where they need to be, but that floor just wasn’t for met.

If there is anything I have learned through my hospital stays, and my journey of seeking help for my mental health it’s this: people are willing to accommodate you if you just ask nicely. Never be afraid to ask, especially in healthcare settings because their job is to help you. In general, the people in your life will be happy to help too. And there is always something positive in every situation. Sometimes you have to look a little harder but it’s always there. For example, yes my stay on the floor I was originally admitted to was less than ideal but the food was better than any hospital food I ever had, the recreational therapists were amazing, and my nurses, social worker, and doctor were incredible too.

This year has brought so many challenges, heart breaks and triumphs to so many. Know that whatever this year brought for you is what was meant for you. Maybe you relaxed and took your time. Maybe you learned something new and changed your outlook. Maybe you started a new business. Maybe you carried on in your daily life as usual. There is no right or wrong. Especially with the challenges this year brought, making it to the end of December 2020 is an accomplishment in itself. I hope this year brought you what you needed, even if you don’t realize what that is yet. Happy New Year everyone.

xoxo

Kass

My Photoshoot With Anne V

Back in December, I had the amazing opportunity to photograph model Anne V and her daughter Alaska. This has been by far my favourite experience as a photographer for so many reasons! First off not only is Anne an amazing model, she is incredibly kind, positive, and a great mom to Alaska. I love working with families and capturing special bonds, and being able to create with Anne and Alaska was so fun! Through our three days together, I captured what a typical busy weekend is like for the two. I love capturing authentic moments, and telling a story. I decided to keep the blurry photos, keep the garbage in the background, and focus on the candid photos to showcase the authenticity of our time together. See below for the story we told!

10 Wellness Tips During Self Isolation

“Selfcare is giving the world the best of you, instead of what’s left of you” - Katie Reed.

During this time of chaos and uncertainty it is important that we take care of ourselves. Many people are working from home and navigating how to stay on top of their work while their kiddos run around their makeshift office. Others are out of work and scrambling to make ends meet. Remember that everything is temporary, and right now things are changing so quickly. Take each day one day at a time . While you have this time at home practice some wellness and mindfulness. Use this time to recharge and take care of yourself. Here are my top 5 simple ways to show yourself some care during this time!

#1 Create an Affirmation Board

Similar to a vision board, I like to write down affirmations and put them up on my wall. An easy way to do this is by pinning the affirmations to a cork board. Make each affirmation something that resonates with you personally. Each day I will find one affirmation that really speaks to me at that moment in time. According to Psychology Today , we should repeat an affirmation out loud for five minutes three times a day. On my affirmation board I have a mix of affirmations and positive quotes and reminders. This is a great activity to do while you are in side, it is a quick and easy way to get creative and manifest your desires.

Here is what my affirmation board looks like!

Affirmations for Success

#2 DIY Face Mask

Face masks are a great way to quickly feel refreshed! Another great option is to make a DIY face or body scrub. If you are finding yourself with extra time on your hands create something with the ingredients in your kitchen to nourish or hydrate your skin.

Here are two of my favourite at home skin care remedies:

The Calming Honey Mask

  • 2 tablespoons of pure honey

  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon

  • 1 wedge of fresh lemon

The Exfoliating Brown Sugar Scrub (Perfect for the face or body!)

  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons of virgin coconut oil

  • Add two drops of your choice of essential oil

#3 Meditate for 3 Minutes

Meditation_Kassandra_ann

Don’t get me wrong, meditation is great, but meditation is hard! For me I find it best to start with a short meditation. The 3 minute mark is great for me. When you meditate find yourself a comfortable seated position, close your eyes, set a timer, and focus on your breath. I often find listening to guided meditations, or calming music helpful. There are several great resources for guided meditations on YouTube and the App Insight Timer. If you find in your meditation practice your thoughts are wandering, come back to focus on your breath. Be still. Be present. And remember you only have to sit still for 3 short minutes!

#4 Start a Gratitude Journal

Gratitude journals are a great way to improve your well being. Naturally when you take a moment to appreciate all of the good things in your life, it helps you to be more positive. Several studies have shown that by taking a few moments a day to write down what you are grateful for increases happiness, positivity, and improves self - esteem.

#5 Get Some Fresh Air

Oregon_Kassandra_Ann

Take a few minutes out of your day to step outside! If it is available to you, go for a walk near the water. Maybe it’s a river, lake or the ocean. Being in nature helps us to stay grounded. Having to stay inside all of the time and being unable to participate in our regular routines is difficult. Make sure to allow yourself to re-energize by being in Mother Nature.

#6 Read More

There are so many amazing books out there including great Audio Books. Audio books are great because you can listen to them while multi-tasking. One of my favourite options for a short read everyday, is reading a poem or two before bed. My current book of poetry is: Yesterday I Was The Moon By: Noor Unnahar. Stay tuned for my upcoming blog posts on book recommendations!

#7 Have a Bath

Ever want to have a bath but feel like you don’t have the time? Now is the perfect time! Not only is taking a bath great for your muscles, and joints, it is great for reducing anxiety and stress levels. If you are feeling extra stressed during this time, take a moment to light some candles and have a bath.

#8 Do Some Yoga

yoga

Recently I have been committing myself to a daily yoga practice. My daily practice is often only ten minutes followed by a short meditation and reading for three minutes. It is super important that we keep our bodies moving, and yoga is a great way to gently move. Yoga is great for improving flexibility, strength, improving posture, and helps relax your body.

#9 Listen to a Podcast

Podcasts to listen to

There are so many amazing podcasts out there about every topic. I often listen to podcasts in the car, or while cleaning. One Podcast for self care that I love is Live Awake by: Sarah Blondin. Another great podcast for when you need a laugh is Unhappy Hour by: Matt Bellassai. Armchair Expert by: Dax Shepard is another great listen! There are so many different podcasts that I love to listen to for different reasons, but I think these three are a great start if you are looking for something new!

#10 Watch Your Favourite Movie

Get cozy in your blankets and watch your favourite movie. Watching your favourite movie can be super comforting especially if you are feeling down!

If you’ve made it this far, thank you so much for reading my first blog post in a while! I will be writing more soon! Let me know what you would like me to write about in the comments below.

Why I started a YouTube Channel

IMG_9370.jpg

Videography has been a passion of mine for years. When I was twelve I would make shot films with my younger sister and her friends and would spend my summers writing movie scripts with my neighbours. My passion for film began to fade when my love of photography took over.
